Soft Story Retrofit At 1260 Broadway

The Mandatory Soft Story Retrofit Program (MRP) aims to strengthen buildings with a known vulnerability, referred to as a "soft story" condition, to make them earthquake-resistant by implementing a seismic retrofit. All buildings that potentially possess this condition were notified, and this particular building fell under compliance tier III.

According to the mandatory seismic retrofit ordinance of San Francisco, all buildings meeting specific criteria are required to undergo retrofitting. These criteria include having wood frame construction, being two or more stories tall, being constructed before January 1, 1978, and containing five or more residential units.

To comply with these regulations, seismic improvements were made to the building, specifically in the ground-level parking area. The project involved the installation of three grade beams and three moment frames, with additional steel beams extending from the moment frames to the opposing wall, serving as collectors to enhance the building's structural stability.
